Homemade buns

If you are a bread lover looking for healthy, low in calories alternative to regular bread try this recipe for homemade cinnamon buns. They don’t require any butter, eggs, refined flour or sugar. These buns are very easy to make and if stored in draft free conditions they maintain freshness for couple of days.

Ingredients:

  • 180 mL warm water (around 40°C)
  • 4 teaspoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon dry yeast
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 240-300 grams wholegrain wheat flour

Instructions:

Lightly coat a 23 cm pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Combine water, molasses, olive oil and salt in a large bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on top, and set aside for 10-15 minutes or until the mixture turns frothy.

Mix in the cinnamon and flour. If the dough is still wet, continue add some more flour - the dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl.

Flour a flat surface and transfer the dough onto it. Knead for 3-5 minutes - the dough should spring back when you gently press your finger into it. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.

Using a sharp knife divide the dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece in a shape of a bun, and place into the prepared pan. After rolling and placing twelve buns cover the pan with a clean towel and set the in a warm, dry spot,  for 45-60 minutes - until the buns will double in size.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the rolls for 15-17 minutes or until the sides feel firm. Cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before serving.

These yummy and healthy rolls taste terrific with low in sugar fruit jams and make great breakfast or a perfect snack with your afternoon tea. Enjoy!
